Baking Adventures Continue! DIY Carrot & Dirt Chocolate Mousse

RECIPE:
(4 servings)

"Carrot" Chocolate Covered Strawberries
-Strawberries w/ very green/nice/fresh leaves (they will be seen)
-Wilton orange candy melts

1) Wash your strawberries, make sure they are dried well
2) Melt your candy melts using the instructions provided on the package
3) Hold the strawberries by the leaves and dip them in, wiggling them around to cover as much of the strawberry as possible, avoiding the leaves
4) Set them on parchment paper to dry. Wilton candy melts tend to set very quick!
5) Place the left over melted candy melts in a Ziploc bag and cut a small slit
6) Drizzle some on top of the coated strawberries to give them a carrot texture look

Chocolate Mousse:
-2 eggs separated, yolk & whites
-2/3 cup of semi sweet chocolate chips
-2 tablespoons of butter
-4 tablespoons of granulated sugar
-1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
-1 cup heavy cream
-1/2 teaspoon instant coffee/espresso powder
-a bit of water

1) Whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Place into the fridge for later use

2) Combine the egg yolks and sugar until they turn very pale. Set aside
3) Using a double boiler method, add the chocolate chips, butter, vanilla extract, and coffee mixture into the bowl.
4) Mix until the mixture is nicely melted
5) Turn off the heat and slowly add the egg yolk mixture
6) After the mixtures are incorporated together, turn on to medium heat to cook the egg yolks a bit
7) Let the mixture cool before combining to the next mixture
8) In another bowl, whip the egg whites until they are light and fluffy, with soft peaks
9) Once the chocolate egg yolk mixture has cooled, lightly the egg whites into the mixture
10) Lastly, combine the heavy cream to the new mixture
Place the mousse batter into containers or watch the video to see how I did mine. The mousse takes at least 6 hours to set in the fridge!

"Dirt" Cookie Crumbs
-9 Oreo cookies
1) Remove the middle filling of the Oreos
2) Using a blender, ziploc or bowl & utensil, turn the cookies into crumbs

Assemble! (As shown in the YouTube video)

THROWBACK TUESDAY: Polymer clay burger tutorial in 40 seconds!

4/8/2014

Back in grade 8 I had to do an "ENriched EXpoloration" (ENEX) project where I had to choose an occupation or passion/hobby I had. Long story short, I decided to research on polymer clay! It was pretty cool because the project forced me to view polymer clay in another perspective - more like a form of medium. I was really into polymer clay back then and I guess still am to this day. I really wished that I had the time and the motivation to create more miniature pieces though! Also, the thought of adding new charms for sale on etsy has been creeping in my mind. HMMM...

Anyways, the project presentation required me to have a hook. Something to grab my classmate's attention. AND THAT IS HOW THE 40 SECOND BURGER TUTORIAL CAME TO BE!  So exciting right?

DIY: Message in an Egg

4/6/2014

Time to catch up! I am so sorry for never updating this website. It's hard to when there's so many different social media sites! Starting today I'll post more ;)

IT'S ALMOST EASTER GUYS! Time to write some personalized messages and gift them to others. To do this, why not hide your message in an egg?! Whether you celebrate Easter or not, this tutorial is really fun to do. For myself, Easter is a holiday that reminds myself and other Christians of Jesus' death and resurrection. In one of the eggs I included a bible reference: John 3:16 - " For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life"(NIV). My goal for this Easter is to really focus on the main character of Easter instead of the holiday traditions. What do you think?

Make your own set of watercolour paints!

Watercolour painting is always a fun activity. What if I told you that you could customize and create your very own set of paints? And that is exactly what I will be showing you in this blog post! What's great about this DIY tutorial is that you will know  every ingredient used in the watercolour. Plus, it's a great way to spend a boring afternoon.
Picture

MATERIALS:

- 1/2 cup Baking soda
- 1/2 cup Cornstarch (corn flour)
- 1/2 Tablespoon Corn syrup
- 3/8 cup White vinegar
- Food colouring (I'm using gel)
- Ice cube tray or any container for the watercolours
{Good to fill 1 ice cube tray}

Using an ice cube tray to hold these watercolour paints is suggested. Long bead containers are also a good option and a great way to make the paints portable.
Picture

1. Combine the baking soda & white vinegar

Make sure to pour the vinegar in slowly to prevent the mixture from overflowing. Mix thoroughly.

2. Add in the corn syrup

3. Add in the cornstarch

The end result should be like a crepe batter consistency and the mixture should be very smooth and without any lumps.
Picture

4. Pour the mixture into its container

Mix while you pour the mixture to prevent the cornstarch from sinking to the bottom.

5. Take a popsicle stick and use it to add in the food colouring

The colour of the paint will appear lighter on paper, so make sure each colour is well pigmented. Add in some glitter if you would like.

6.  Allow the mixture to dry for at least 2-3 days before using it
